Building a successful yacht program is about much more than just the transaction; it’s about the people and the long-term synergy between an owner and their crew. At the end of the day, a vessel is only as good as the team that runs it, and finding that perfect match is an art form in itself.
Recently, I had the pleasure of connecting a set of owners with a captain I highly respect. The overall process took nearly a year. Even in the early stages, it has all the markings of a fantastic, long-term fit. This particular match was made without a fee, because at Troyer Yachts, our focus is on building a solid foundation for a program rather than just generating a quick commission.
However, what happened after the handshake is what truly stayed with me.
A Rare Gesture of Gratitude
The captain treated Beth Troyer and myself to a wonderful dinner as a gesture of appreciation. He didn’t have to do it, and it certainly wasn’t expected, but it was his way of saying “thank you.”
Reflecting on this during the meal, I realized how rare these gestures have become. Over the years, I’ve helped place many crew members who don’t even follow up with a simple note of thanks. This isn’t a complaint; it’s a reflection on the state of manners, thankfulness, and professional appreciation in our industry today.
Why “Old School” Still Wins
In an era of fast-paced digital communication and “on to the next one” mentalities, the human element can sometimes get lost at sea. We believe that these small details matter. Whether it’s a firm handshake, a sincere thank you, taking the time to connect, or sharing a meal, those “old school” values are the bedrock of the strongest relationships on the water.
When a captain or a crew member takes the time to show appreciation, it signals a level of character and professionalism that will inevitably translate into how they care for the owners and the vessel.
The Troyer Way
Are we old school at Troyer Yachts? Maybe. But if being old school means prioritizing relationships over commissions and integrity over shortcuts, then we wouldn’t have it any other way.
A huge thank you to the Captain for the hospitality and the reminder that class and character are still the most valuable commodities in yachting.
Looking to build a program based on integrity? Let’s connect.
